Our Mission Diary

July 5, 2006

Betty and Shamin were busy heading down to local Gauteng organizations. They had two events planned for today: one with an organization called Nkosi’s Haven and the other with the Zimbanthi project program. First they went to Nkosi’s Haven where two youths, around the age of sixteen, helpfully directed them to a town called Tembisa. At the organization, they were supposed to host a workshop but due to complications, this was not possible today. It was rescheduled for the 16th of July.

Shamin and Betty were, however, given a tour of the facilities and surrounding area. They learned that the organization has not had government funding until recently. The community project of the organization was very interesting: the community had built Nkosi’s Haven by making bead pins which they sold for R 10 (approximately $2 CAD).

After the tour, Betty and Shamin headed to Tambisa Market to buy fruit. At 2:00PM, they were back at Nkosi’s Haven in Berea, Johannesburg, where they held a workshop for about 20 children, youths and young adults between the ages of seven and twenty-one years old. All the young participants were very cooperative and had lots of fun. They made bead bracelets and necklaces and drew DAREarts cards and Hands of Hope pictures to demonstrate their eagerness to invoke changes within their country and internationally.
